This mom is seeking more than a job. She’s looking for a little humanity.

Any day after September 26, 2011 (when I became a first-time mom)

To whom it may concern:

I’m writing to apply to the position of visible human being. I think I’d be a good fit for this job because of my extensive experience in the nearly 33 years I spent holding such a role before I delivered my eldest son on September 26, 2011.

In the years leading up to motherhood, I was a head turner. When I walked into a room, people paid attention. I was fine looking, but it wasn’t about my looks. I knew how to take command of the room. People listened to what I had to say. More importantly, they cared about what I had to say.

For years, I led debates about subjects like climate change and women’s rights. I gave speeches about being the child of immigrants. Small talk was a gift of mine. I could chat people up about their hobbies or family. They learned about jarring tomatoes in summer and Italian travel from me.

People hung onto my words. Sometimes, they could even repeat them back. The point is that someone was always listening to me. Better still, they were hearing me. I mattered.
